Attila Keresztes: Hungarian companies could relocate to Romania to develop renewable projects

Romania and Hungary have many similarities and both are at a point where they could create global renewable energy and hydrogen companies. For that, they should collaborate and exploit the potential that both states have.

“It is a good time to create very large companies active in the photovoltaic industry, because the potential is much greater here. Practically, there are no limits and the renewable energy market will continue to be open for at least another 20 years. We have many pathways open before us, but it is difficult to choose the best one. On the other hand, the conflict in Ukraine can crush our dreams”, said Dr. Attila Keresztes, Managing Director of Astrasun Solar, at the conference “Regional approach Budapest: Cooperation” organised by Energynomics.

The potential of the renewable energy market in the European Union is around 600 GW, and that of the hydrogen market is at least twice as much. Romania and Hungary could establish themselves as leaders at the European level by investing in research and production of hydrogen, an industry that is just beginning at the global level.

Keresztes stated that Astrasun is in discussions with a university in Romania to create a research project in the field of hydrogen and has a similar project in Hungary.

Astrasun was founded in 1998 and has developed over 160 renewable energy projects to date. According to Keresztes, Romania and Hungary have many things and interests in common, but they need to collaborate more closely in order to be able to exploit them.

“We are far from reaping the benefits we could have together, although we have a multitude of possibilities to cooperate. Both countries have great potential. It is the best time to join forces,” he added.

Also, the two states could benefit from the fact that they have high potential for the installation of photovoltaic plants and also have specialized engineers. The photovoltaic market in Hungary is currently blocked, so “10,000 qualified people” could be relocated for the construction of renewable installations in Romania, thus reducing the installation costs in Romania and saving the PV companies in Hungary.
